We Were Strangers ~I thought you were a stranger,That first timeReaching for your hidden mind,Stroking the broken wordsThat you never spoke to me…I thought you were a stranger… ~Why does it have to be so hard to understand? Why can’t I catch a tear and hold it in my hand? The lightning always flickers in your eyeDid you ever even learn how to cry?I thought you were a stranger… ~I thought I was a strangerThat last timeReaching for my hidden mindBreaking the fragile dreamsThat I never gave to you…I thought I was a stranger… ~Why does it have to be so hard to understand? Why can’t I catch a tear and hold it in my hand? The lightning always flickers in my eyeDid I ever even learn how to cry?I thought I was a stranger… ~I thought that we were strangersAll the timeTreasuring our touching mindsHolding the whispered fearsThat we always understoodI thought that we were strangers… ~Why does it have to be so hard to understand? Why can’t we catch our tears and hold them in our hands? The lightning always flickers in our eyesDid we ever even learn how to cry?I thought that we were strangers…I thought that we were free…
I LOVE IT! It’s begging for music. “Why can’t we catch our tears and hold them”…reminds me of “how do you hold a moonbeam in your hand” (from Sound of Music)…but your line has the added depth of holding sadness. It makes me think of another song that describes the desire and challenges we all face in trying to connect (MEW, Behind the Drapes).
